"When you're in jail, a good friend will be trying to bail you out. A best friend will be in the cell next to you saying, 'Damn, that was fun'." Groucho Marx
This is something I think about a lot… trying to figure out what the boundaries are going to be when it comes to discipline as a step-parent. They won’t be “my” kids, and at the same time they will. And it will absolutely be my responsibility to treat them as if they were. So where will the lines fall when it comes to discipline, on the (hopefully very rare) occasions when I’ll be the only parent in the home?
“Wait till your father gets home,” the bane of all kids’ existence, can only stretch so far if it turns into a tool for them to disrespect me since they know I’m powerless… but like you said, I don’t want to end up with crap down my neck 🙂

The situation your describe is different from the one I was referring to, but definitely challenging.

Meanwhile, I couldn’t agree with you more. Eek.
