Every so often we like to mix things up and run a lighter post and today is one of those days. What are your favorite song lyrics?
Here is a partial list of mine:
“Let the frozen cities crumble, crumble and fall
That’s alright, I don’t mind at all
Let ’em all tumble right into the sea
Well that’s just fine, that’s alright with me
Since you came down the line
I can’t sleep at night, I got one thing on my mind
That’s every day, every night
I wanna be with you”
I WANNA BE WITH YOU- Bruce Springsteen
“So you’re scared and you’re thinking
That maybe we ain’t that young anymore
Show a little faith, there’s magic in the night
You ain’t a beauty, but hey you’re alright
Oh and that’s alright with me
You can hide `neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now I’m no hero
That’s understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair”
Thunder Road- Bruce Springsteen
“Will you walk with me out on the wire
`Cause baby I’m just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta find out how it feels
I want to know if love is wild
girl I want to know if love is real”
Born To Run- Springsteen
“Let us be lovers,
We’ll marry our fortunes together.
I’ve got some real estate
Here in my bag.”
America- Simon & Garfunkel
“They held each other tight as they drove on through the night they were so excited.
We got just one shot of life, let’s take it while we’re still not afraid.
Because life is so brief and time is a thief when you’re undecided.
And like a fistful of sand, it can slip right through your hands.’
Young Turks- Rod Stewart
“May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.”
Forever Young- Bob Dylan
“And if you come, when all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You’ll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an “Ave” there for me.”
Danny Boy

For now, my favorite song is Gentleman by Psy. It is amazing and I am glad that the quirky lyrics and the fantastic choreography and the brilliant techno stuff is spreading like wild fire across the world. This can match Gangnam Style.

This is the road you walk
Look! Look ahead of you
That is your future

I love lyrics that make me pause and reflect, ones whose meaning change for me because I have changed.
These lines from “Landslide” by Stevie Nicks always catch in my stomach:
Well, I’ve been afraid of changing
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
I’m getting older too
Jack says
Landslide is among my favorites too, so powerful.

I gotta jump in on this one! I’m a HUGE Parrothead so anything by Buffett works for me but here are a couple of my favorites:
And now I must confess, I could use some rest
I can’t run at this pace very long
Yes, it’s quite insane, I think it hurts my brain
But it cleans me out and then I can go on
Yes, it cleans me out and then I can go on
— Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season
I used to rule my world from a pay phone
Ships out on the sea
But now times are rough
And I got too much stuff
Can’t explain likes of me
Chorus:
But there’s this one particular harbour
So far but yet so near
Where I see the days as they fade away
And finally disappear
But now I think about the good times
Down in the caribbean sunshine
In my younger days I was so bad
Laughin’ about all the fun we had
— One Particular Harbor
PS I’ve been making my own Pinterest Buffett pins with my favorite lyrics. You should make some with your favorite lyrics.

“So Far, but yet so near.”
I have been thinking about that line all day. There is so said with such few words, made more powerful with the music. Awesome, simply awesome.

Must be Johnny’s Ain’t no grave…
“Well, look way down the river, what do you think I see?
I see a band of angels and they’re coming after me
Ain’t no grave can hold my body down
There ain’t no grave can hold my body down ”
I don’t know, he always gets me in this mood…

Love Johnny.

Spend his very last dime
Tryin’ to hold on to what he needs

This is a fun post. 🙂

Hi Brian,
Great song. I don’t mean to be obnoxious, but didn’t Percy Sledge write that?

“America” always makes me think of my relationship with my husband.
“Bridge Over Troubled Water” has to be my all time favorite spiritual connection song. This is the message I got repeatedly when I was finally about to get pregnant with my first child, I especially love this verse:
“Sail on Silver Girl,
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way”
My favorite from Bruce:
“Now you play the loving woman I’ll play the faithful man
But just don’t look too close into the palm of my hand
We stood at the alter the gypsy swore our future was right
But come the wee wee hours maybe baby the gypsy lied
So when you look at me you better look hard and look twice
Is that me baby or just a brilliant disguise”
Oh and this one reminds me of two men I know:
“Workin in the field till you get your back burned
Workin `neath the wheels till you get your facts learned.
Baby I got my facts learned real good right now.
You better get it straight darling:
Poor men wanna be rich, rich men wanna be kings,
And a king aint satisfied till he rules everything.”
All time favorites are probably
Carry On My Wayward Son – Kansas
Southern Cross – Crosby Stills and Nash
Whatta Man – En Vogue (a bit silly but always makes me smile in appreciation for all the great men I know)
Jack says
Hi Julie,
Bridge Over Troubled Water is certainly on my list, especially that verse, it resonates with me.
Bruce never disappoints me, I could go all day quoting him, Tunnel of Love is one of my all time favorite albums.
I wrote a whole post about Southern Cross.

Just about anything Bruce writes is a favorite of mine. “Even The Losers” by Tom Petty is a big one too. A teen anthem. Love it now liked I loved it then.
Jack says
Petty has some good material too.
